Message from the Dean

Dear SNS Community,

I believe this is an opportune time to craft a long-range plan that amplifies the unprecedented success of the School of Natural Sciences and ensures that we shine on the national and international stage. We have built strong foundations in our disciplines and curricula, and it is the time to define what will make us a destination of choice for faculty, students and staff in the future.

The campus has identified the following overarching priorities: UC Quality Research, UC Quality Academic Programs, and Diversity. Our long-range plan will express these themes in goals, objectives and action items that are meaningful to our future vision of research, teaching and public service in our School.

Three Phases of Planning

Principles and Structure of SNS Planning

Progress and Outcomes to Date

Three Phases of Planning

Three phases of planning were defined by the Provost and Academic Senate. Briefly, they are:

Phase I, September 2019 - early 2020. Schools develop a draft statement of values/aspirational goals aligned with Indices of Success identified by the Academic Planning Work Group. School drafts will be shared with campus for comment.

Phase II, January- September 2020. Schools develop 5-year plans that integrate departmental, programmatic, and staff plans. Plans should include goals, objectives/strategies, and metrics. School plans will be shared with campus for comment in September 2020.

Phase III, September 2020 – April 2021. Schools, departments and programs revise plans as per campus feedback. Final plans will be due in spring of 2021.

Principles and Structure of SNS Planning

SNS planning is based on the principles of consultation, representative government, and transparency. The process began with broad consultation. All faculty (including Lecturers), staff, graduate students and post docs were invited to participate in a series of facilitated discussions held in early December 2019. They were also invited to submit comments through an online survey.

Subsequent discussions of planning are occurring among the following administrative and representative groups, who are responsible for consulting with their constituencies:

  • Faculty are represented by the SNS Long Range Planning Group, composed of the SNS Leadership Council (Department, Graduate, and Biology program Chairs) and Executive Committee

Your representatives are your delegates to these planning conversations. Please reach out to them if you have comments, questions, or concerns. Their meeting schedules are listed below. Expect changes as we adjust for progress over the semester. The contents and outcomes of all meetings will be posted on this website. You also will be notified when drafts of key documents are posted for feedback from the SNS community.
