Spring 2021 Outstanding Student: Lek Wei Seow

Lek Wei Seow (Anson) is an undergraduate student at University of California, Merced graduating spring of 2021 with a Bachelors of Science in Biological Science and an emphasis in Microbiology and Immunology. His passion to become a pathologist started when he was in high school and strengthened by gaining related experiences through college. During his time at UC Merced, Lek Wei worked under Dr. Katrina Hoyer as an undergraduate research assistant for Immunology research studies on autoimmunity for two years and had one manuscript in preparation to publish. He also completed a ten week long summer research program at Stanford University. He volunteered in the Mercy Medical Center Hospital once a week for two semesters, gaining insight stories from different patients. He also volunteered in the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank five days a week during summer, delivering fresh produce to people who were suffering from hunger. Currently, he is part of the Phi Delta Epsilon International Medical Fraternity, the Society for Medical Science, and the Hmong Student Associationat UC Merced. After becoming a mentor in Educational Conference for Hmong Student Association and a volunteer in Expanding Your Horizon for Phi Delta Epsilon, Lek Wei had the passion to support and educate the low-income students within the central valley. He became fascinated with the possibility of offering higher education resources and knowledge to the high school students. Upon graduation from UC Merced, he will be applying to graduate schools around the nation to pursue his goal of becoming a pathologist. Lek Wei’s aspiration comes from his family, without their genuine support through his academic journey, these achievements would not be possible.
