Centers and Institutes

A Collective Focus on Thematic Discovery

Research centers and institutes provide the opportunity to collaborate with scholars and scientists at UC Merced and beyond to find innovative solutions to the most pressing problems affecting society today.

Center for Cellular and Biomolecular Machines logo

Center for Cellular and Biomolecular Machines

Funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation Centers of Research Excellence in Science and Technology (CREST) program, the Center for Cellular and Biomolecular Machines is an interdisciplinary research center focused on functional assemblies of biological and bio-inspired materials. The center also hosts integrated, interdisciplinary training programs for graduate students that emphases both physical and biological components with research and training experiences for undergraduate and high school students.

Center for Excellence for the Study of Health Disparities logo

Funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Center of Excellence for the Study of Health Disparities has the goal to increase the number of UC Merced students who are knowledgeable about health disparities, improve the number of students from under-represented and disadvantaged groups performing research in this area, and expand the capacity of the university in conducting health sciences research that addresses disparities in the region.

Health Sciences Research Institute logo

The Health Sciences Research Institute (HSRI) is a catalyst for important and innovative research on complex human health issues that affect both the San Joaquin Valley and the world.

Merced Nanomaterials Center for Enery and Sensing logo

Merced nAnomaterials Center for Energy and Sensing

MACES’ mission is to promote excellence in research and education in the broadly defined area of functional nanomaterials. By fostering innovative and collaborative research programs, the center aims to enable materials with revolutionary new capabilities in energy conversion and sensing.

Sierra Nevada Research Institute logo

The Sierra Nevada Research Institute (SNRI) at UC Merced discovers and disseminates new knowledge that contributes to sustaining natural resources and promoting social well-being in the Sierra Nevada/Central Valley region, and related regions worldwide.

INSITE: The INstitute for Symbiotic Interactions, Training, and Education in the Face of a Changing Climate

The NSF Biological Integration Institute, INSITE brings together a multi-disciplinary team at the University of California Merced and Michigan State University to study and understand how complex relationships between animal species and microbes are currently being threatened by climate change as well as how these interactions will respond in certain climate futures.

The Center for Chemical Computation and Theory (ccCAT)

The Center for Chemical Computation and Theory (ccCAT) at UC Merced brings together a collaborative group of theorists in chemistry and physics to address challenges in fundamental theory and computational methods for modeling functional transition metal compounds in complex environments.
