Spring 2021 Outstanding Student: Carson Potter

Carson Potter (born June 26, 1999) was born and raised in the central valley, living primarily in Atwater and Merced. After falling in love with chemistry at a high school level, both for learning it and tutoring it, he decided to pursue chemistry for his major. Upon applying to several different colleges, Carson chose to study at UC Merced. Not only was it a smaller college, affording him more interaction with peers and professors, but it was close to home. This allowed him to stay with friends and family, both old and new, and continue to provide for them. While at UC Merced and pursuing his BS in Chemical Sciences, he had maintained a 3.9 GPA, established great relationships with both colleagues and faculty, and worked as a undergraduate remedial tutor at the Chem Center and as a research assistant for Amber Arroyo (a previous member of the UC Merced, Psychoneuroendocrinology Lab). With his career as a student, he learned important aspects of analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and his favorite: organic chemistry. He also obtained insightful perspectives of the chemistry profession and community, all afforded by the excellent chemistry department. Carson is both nervous and excited for his experience at UC Merced to conclude and will be taking the support and opportunities provided to apply to a pharmacy program and pursue a career as a pharmacist.
