Spring 2022 Outstanding Student: Sierra Montes

Sierra is a first-generation college student who will be receiving her Bachelor of Science in Biology with an emphasis in Ecology and Evolution. Throughout her journey at UC Merced she has been extremely grateful to be able to take advantage of the many opportunities the university has to offer. During her first year she was excited to take part in the Carson House Living Learning Community. During her sophomore year she joined the UCM Softball Club and later became the Vice President of the club. This same year she became a Student Assistant under Professor Michael Dawson’s Research Lab. Her junior year she spent a semester camping in several UC Natural Reserves as part of the California Ecology and Conservation Program. During her senior year she was accepted into an internship within the EPA. She also began her first job as the UC Merced Campus Biologist Student Assistant in which she helps with the conservation of species and natural environments on campus as well as on the Merced Vernal Pools and Grassland Reserve. She hopes that the experience she has gained from these opportunities will help her succeed in pursuing a career as Field Biologist.
