Abstract:
Coexistence of close relatives, e.g., many congeners, lies at the nexus where evolutionary processes like speciation and ecological challenges like competition affect local coexistence. These processes are especially strong in close relatives, owing to recent speciation history and shared ecological and physical similarity. Here, I explore mechanisms influencing coexistence in California plant communities, including trait evolution, reproductive interference and competition/facilitation.
