Pre-Calculus (Math 5)

Students should be familiar with the following concepts prior to taking Math 5.

  • Basic math and algebra
  • Mixed numbers and fractions (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing)
  • Simplifying fractions and complex fractions
  • Number operations & properties (associative, commutative, distributive properties)
  • Order of operations
  • Solving for multiple unknowns (multiple steps, variables on both sides)
  • Roots (square roots and cube roots)
  • Powers & exponents (product of powers, power of powers, quotient of powers)
  • Factoring trinomials, differences of squares, and perfect squares
  • Exponents, monomials, and polynomials
  • Inequalities (systems, graphs, and addition and multiplication property of inequalities)
  • Inequalities involving absolute value
  • Absolute value (comparing and solving absolute value equations & statements)
  • Identifying and graphing linear and nonlinear equations (coordinate plane, intercepts & slope of lines, equation for a line given its slope, equation for a line given two points)
  • Multiplying and dividing rational expressions
  • Dividing a polynomial by a monomial, binomial
  • Solving rational equations
  • Simplifying, adding, subtracting, and multiplying radical expressions
  • Pythagorean theorem
  • Distance formula
  • Elementary functions (polynomials, rational, trigonometric and exponential)
